What is Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)?

Have you ever felt left out in the workplace? Was it because of your gender, the color of your skin, who you choose to love, or you’re simply ‘different’ than the vast majority? Diversity is the presence of these differences, especially in any work-related environment. These dissimilarities may often include gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, ethnic background, age, political opinions, spoken languages, religion, disabilities, and financial status. There will always be a range of psychological, physical, and social differences in the workplace – no matter what. That’s human nature.


Equity promotes justice. It ensures everyone has access to the same treatment. Often, tackling equity will require the DEI training session leader to understand the root cause of any disparities within the group. Equity aims to eliminate barriers and promote fairness. Obstacles can come in many forms; gender inequality, for example, is a significant barrier that so many women face daily in the workplace. Equity aims to eliminate biases or unfair judgment solely based on a person’s differences.


Inclusion is accomplished when minorities feel part of the larger group. It aims to ensure all those who are diverse feel welcome, safe and part of the team. Making EVERYONE in your institution, program, or workplace feel equal, and their opinions are valued are one of the greatest things any leader can do. Think about how frustrating it may be for a team member to be left out just because of their political opinion or skin color.
